Very rarely do we find a $0.99 game with great graphics, great controls, and provides lots of fun. So when I recieved wind of DMCC (Ratrod Studios) I knew I had to check it out.
DMCC is a racing game that focuses on the drifting style of racing. Drifting involves throwing your vehicle around many corners to rack up the best score possible, it requires the use of the E-brake, and great steering. This game focuses primarily on the Canadian drift circuit which is currently in progress. You take in the role as a DMCC driver and your objective is to score the most points possible during a race. However, you're not racing against other racers, but by yourself. There are several tracks available as well as several kinds of cars. Each successive car is earned by getting first place in the previous race. Now Ratrod Studios has incorporated an ingenious control mechanic that allows for the best possible controls ever for a game like this. They call it the Variable Throttle System and it allows fine control over your cars speed while in corners and while out of corners. This control mechanic fits perfectly and works extremely well, I feel in control of my car throughout the entirety of the race and have never lost control or crashed.
The actual races don't feel normal, however, and I believe this is because of the physics of the cars. To me everything is to abnormal. The cars physics are just completely off and ditract from the overall experience of the game. For $.99 I shouldn't be picky, but this is a huge annoyance for me. This is supposed to represent the Canadian Drift Circuit, however, the lack of physics tuning is not doing it any justice. A few tweaks here and there of the physics engine could really send this to the top of the AppStore.
DMCC is a universal app, and runs at the native resolution on the iPad. As we are lacking any devices other than anything previous to the 3GS we cannot test it. However, the reviews are pretty much in favor of the game for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod. The general concensus is positive, however, DMCC has a little further to go before becoming great. Regardless of how we feel, for $.99 this is a great title. A definite recommendation for any racer fans out there, the Variable Throttle System allows beginner and hardcore gamers fine tune control over their car, and it makes for an excellent driving mechanic.
